Edges (our community dungeon and education space) in Santa Clara, CA faces potential closure within 120 days due to planning department requirements.

As a condition of being granted the correct permit to allow assemblage on premises Edges needs to complete a CEQA report. There are only eight companies approved to do this for Santa Clara's planning department and cost will be around $20,000. Additionally there may be other safety requirements for the space once this report is done so the funding needs could easily double for material, as well as funds needed to keep the space operating if they close us during this period. The owners of Edges have been working with the planning dept for several months now to try and waive the need for this report without success. At a planning meeting last Wednesday the owners were granted a stay of 120 days to provide the report and prove all findings.

Fundraising has already started with nearly $3000 in donations and many initiatives being planned. But we cannot order the study until we secure all of the necessary funds, which means a very small window! Is there any reason you cannot help? You can help with or without funds or hands-on volunteer time. Here are some great starting points:

Come to Edges events and play parties at the space, there will be a donation jar on the front desk, thermometer to help us tally, and even a couple of $ helpers. If you are unable to attend, encourage your friends to go and show a supportive smile. Check out upcoming events on our calendar

Donate monetarily: Cash, money orders or checks can be dropped through the front door slot or the mail box behind the desk. Suitcases filled with cash must be unmarked bills and cuffed directly to a staff member. Make donations to South Bay Productions or Edges. Send snail mail to our address. Donations online can be made with your debit or credit card AND you can set up recurring donations for as often as you like, for whatever amount you like ($5 every week, $20 every two weeks, $100 a month, etc)

This class will focus on the use of the Singletail, and will cover topics like throwing techniques, top and bottom positioning, the mechanics of throwing, the types of throws to use to get the desired effects, targeting, and safety for both the top and bottom.

Wow—our supporters are amazing! Southern Cross opened their time and energy to help out. And super kudos to the ALT Munch group, hosted by Miss Carolyn and Ray for rallying their supporters and bringing in about 20 folks to pitch in here and there. Some were able to whip out the power tools and hit some big stuff, and lots were able to help us tackle the millions of tiny tasks. I was able to leave today with a giant smile on my face. We had tons of fabulous food throughout the day and evening, lots of dancing and fun, and loads of work accomplished. We would both like to thank each of you for your contribution of time, energy and money. The donations of money and gift certificates for food, Home Depot and Lowes are priceless. And as always: throughout this week our core volunteers were relentless!!!

MOVING ON: This morning I'm wearing nothing but a tool belt and I hear the owner of the tool belt walk in. Unbeknownst to him I've not only commandeered his work tools, but I've also completely rearranged, shifted, and adjusted his darling and loved tool belt. He's gonna be pissed! I run and hide only to let out a long sign that it's someone else's voice. Vicki and Jessica laugh at me to no end, insisting no one in their right mind would be more concerned about readjusting their tool belt than my bare breasts beneath its suspenders...I'm not so sure.

You see, I have come to know tool belts like my dearest and most favorite strap-on. Really they're quite similar! Each is not vital, but immensely useful when you have a task to complete and you want to do so with the ease of knowing you have all of your "tools" in place. Phew, we did it! Super hugs to those of you with the strong backs, tireless smiles, and fooood (thank you sustenance goddesses). That was a superb weekend of kinky warriors that really made an awesome effort in taking time to ensure their dungeon Edges and smOdyssey were all moved. We've got lots of folks that are now dirty inside AND out. And are actively working to keep that theme going. THANK YOU to each and every person that shared their time with us. This will be a continued effort and we need your help in keeping momentum and energy at a high level: if you cannot come out, encourage someone whom can!

I've updated the next weeks calendar for times and day, but do be sure to check or at least call us if there is any doubt. Often we start earlier or end later than expected.

THIS WEEK:

** The contractor will be in to start creating walls: we're extending the social area, creating some new doorways, and still have at least two walls to demo. So bring strong arms with a sledge hammer, 2x4x8 stud material and your tool belt, or cookies and milk.

** We will also be taking all of the recycling off from the old space and some last tiny runs of 'stuff' if you have a pick-up truck.

** We will be strapping in new insulation as well and would be more than THRILLED to have donations in that area!! And we need someone comfy on a step ladder to get through drop ceiling and pull down fallen insulation.

** We do still need some drop ceiling tile panels cut if you are able to help with that.

** There is a lot of debris and such that needs to be taken down from above the hard ceiling areas. Are you comfortable with heights and walking on rafters?

** We are still seeking dry wall purchasing suggestions. This is an area that is really going to cost us. Do you know someone that knows someone that might be able to get a discount!?

** We will begin priming some of the walls and them getting at least the higher areas painted as we finish building below. Are you familiar with a paint sprayer? Are you able to tape off windows and framing?

** We have lots and lots and lots and ... (well, you get the point) ... more.

** UPDATE, 26 June **

With the glitch due to the electrical disturbance we had a shorter day yesterday but got lots done.

** The space was broken into and electrical stripped. The owner is having the claims adjuster come in and will be paying to fix the issue. We’re already taking in quotes (thank you Steve for the Light House info) and hope to see that get done as quickly as possible. We do have a generator for use in that time (feel free to bring by a gallon of gas for use).

** We KICKED SERIOUS ASS on Sunday. Though some of you were disappointed you didn’t get to rip out walls, we had amazing helpers really pull down the space (Our dungeon is gone...Waaaahhhhh) and get it staged and ready to shift. THANK YOU to those of you that were able to help out and super hug to Polly for providing sustenance and fuel in food to keep us going!!

** We’ve started gutting out the new space. We’ve already filled a 30cu yard dumpster and have today had it dumped and brought back to fill again!! My thanks to those of you that helped out so far this week in breaking down and pulling out at this new space. WOW. I know it seems like a daunting task but trust in our ability as a community to want a place to beat on each other and fuck!!!

** I’ve had countless calls from folks that haven’t been out to help yet saying “We’ve heard it’s a mess and you won’t be ready in a few weeks”. My answer (and I hope yours too) is, “It will be if you can come help make it happen!!”. Optimism at its most blunt. Hahaahaa

Woah,
The May 10 fundraiser was incredible! The enthusiasm, love and attention that was brought into this event put it on FIRE. With this event and the closing of the Black membership, Edges has raised over $10,000 in the past few weeks!! With the funds raised we are now able to take on a new lease, complete with first and last months rent paired for a month with our current rent price. That’s over $11,000 we don’t have to be overly worried about now!! That’s incredible.

This event was created by the organizing capacities of Zifra and Daddy Don! Dungeon Bound fed us incredibly well as always and entertained with the games. Our MC’s, Gabrielle and Lady Hilary rocked the house from on stage with their passion and energy. Our incredible “Dollar Workers” put on a hot show with tons of skin and wonderful outfits. SmOdyssey lovingly helped with the auction and South Bay TNG hit the roof with their oil wrestling. Who won Naughty Doc’s “most flexible” trophy anyways!? Pup Nikki and River gave us a second wind with their super yummy late night brunch, Mmmmm. And of so many loving volunteers to help things run smoothly throughout the night.

The air was filled with heat, screams, laughter and my personal favorite: sex! Thanks to everyone that took off their clothes throughout the event!! Sadly I didn’t get away from working long enough to do my cameo on stage so I owe you all and promise to pay up at someone else’s event when I can simply attend and help by doing as promised and getting off on-stage to help raise funds.

Our silent auction sponsors really did an incredible thing by sharing their products with the community! We had near 40 auction items and baskets ranging from $5 to $500.

This class will discuss boots from two viewpoints. First, the boot as an object of worship. Discussion will focus on why boots are worshipped, approaches to a boot-worship scene, and individual techniques for enhancing the enjoyment of both the worshipper and the worshipped. Second, the boot as the subject of care. Discussion will center on general techniques and products that will allow even those with only a casual interest in boot and leather care to develop skills which will extend the life of the boots as well as enhance their appearance.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own boots both for exploration in the worship discussion and for the practical
bootblacking instruction. Basic leather-care kits will be available at a nominal cost.

Teresa Lane Scoville’s early perceptions of form and color grew out of a childhood spent amid Utah’s rugged landscapes and in the tropical settings of Guatemala and Panama. Born in Richfield, Utah, in 1971, she studied drawing and painting at the University of Utah, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995. Along the way, she acquired skill and recognition as a tattoo artist, enabling her to earn a living while she developed as a painter. Currently she lives, paints and works as a tattoo artist in Santa Cruz, California.

The wrapped figure series developed from questions about consciousness and perception. The paintings are of folded fabric, rope and tape but given the spark of life by the viewer. The identity of the bound and mummified figure is anonymous, we assume it is human. A psychological interpretation is of quiet introspection and peace, the folds of cloth symbolizing flat fabric shaped by restraint and experience into a unique landscape of depth and color. But in our media drenched world, images of shrouded corpses or hostages come to mind as well; mysterious, violent or claustrophobic. Every viewer sees a
different face, but free of race or gender, we are all the form beneath the surface.

Do not will this opportunistic class! It is appropriate for any persons whom would like to become certified DMs, those that have not used their skills for an extended period of time, or anyone whom would like a refresher course.

This is an open invitation to all who are interested in being of service to the Leather community. Edges parties are often in need of trained dungeon monitors. Edges will be hosting a Dungeon Monitor Association class on November 24th, Saturday. This class will cover the fundamentals of safe play, being able to determine when play is unsafe, emergency intervention, and more.

We recommend that those who take the class have at least a years experience in BDSM/Leather play at public dungeon parties in order to have the requisite experience for the class. However, those who have become quickly adept at play and are interested in community service are encouraged to attend.

Dungeon Monitors are "dungeon life guards": available to lend a helping hand if needed in a scene, but otherwise always in the background, observing, and staying out of the way of safe players. And then in the rare occasion that a truly dangerous situation occurs... ready and trained to help.

This class will be taught by Daddy Alex, co-founder of the Citadel and liaison to Edges Playspace, and Emeritus Board Member of the Dungeon Monitors Association.

This class will focus mostly on the preparation of the site and basic rigging concepts. This is not to mean it's a beginners class. We all know that familiarity breeds contempt, and suspension bondage is not excused from this time proven proverb.

This is a class that will help the suspension bondage enthusiast understand the "Make-do's and Make-dont's" of setting a suspension scene in an area not SPECIFICALLY designed for suspension bondage. The class will feature some technique and a little demonstration, but will focus mostly on what points we should and should not use for the base rigging.. and why!

Responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling Dungeon Monitors for particular events (not all parties). Must have been active in the public scene for more than two years. Must have taken the DMA certification course or will do so on November 24th, and able to work with mailing list managers (we will provide training).

DOMESTIC GURU-
Benefits include ALL Edges party entrances free, Official Edges polo shirt, personal edges email, working with a great team of community volunteers and more.
Responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling help for twice monthly cleaning of the space. Must have a good sense of order, tidiness, and cleanliness. Will need to come by for a thorough orientation about Edges supplies. Able to work with mailing list managers (we will provide training).

FLYER DISTRIBUTION-
Benefits include 20 party entrances free, ability to network with some fabulous kink and sex positive spaces and vendors in the area.
Responsibilities include getting flyers (either personally or through other volunteers) to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Leather events and more.

FLYER CREATION-
Benefits include 20 party entrances free, increased portfolio and experience
Responsibilities include the creation of Photoshop artwork in the form of flyers for either online distribution or for Edges to order. This would be for occasional events, not all parties.

EDUCATION DIRECTOR-
Benefits include ALL Edges party entrances free, Official Edges polo shirt, personal edges email, working with wonderful educators from all over.
Responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling education classes twice per month. Experience in the Leather scene and with outreach in particular preferred but not required. A passion for learning a must!

PARTY HOSTS-
Benefits include hosting your own event with all of your friends! Bringing together our Leather community, a free rental with a percentage of the PROCEEDS GOING TO THE COMMUNITY GROUP OF YOUR CHOICE!
Responsibilities include an orientation to go over the Edges Event Manual. Covering event volunteers, theme and helping with marketing.

PROJECT MANAGER-

An invitation to those whom are interested in being of service to the Leather community,

Santa Clara County Leather Association and Edges Playspace are in need of trained dungeon
monitors. Saturday, November 3rd is the Annual SSCLA Leather Weekend and Fundraiser.

You do not need to be DMA certified, though it is suggested. However, many of our Dungeon Monitors have been active with various dungeons throughout the years and we are always happy to have their continued support. You must be an Edges or SCCLA member and be knowledgable on the fundamentals of safe play, emergency intervention, and able to facilitate safe play.

This is a wonderful way to support and help maintain the safety and more of one another and our community at large! For merely an hour and a half of your support we will grant you access to the event on this evening.

Dungeon Monitors are not dungeon police. We expect those giving of their time in this position to be available to lend a helping hand if needed in a scene, but otherwise remain in the background, observing, and staying out of the way of safe players. In the rare occasion that a dangerous situation occurs...you must be ready and trained to help. CPR and First Aid certifications are not mandatory, though we do favor those with such training!

What a weekend--Amazing!

Edges is thrilled to have so many groups in our area that are supportive of the space. Southern Cross brought in a huge number of folks from various organizations, social groups and Leather persons from all over the NorCal area and beyond.

Special thanks not only to our volunteers for their energy at the St. Pat’s Paddle-a-Thon event, but ALSO all of those members that visited us last night!

This event was a wonderful success! I was thrilled that so many tops and bottoms within our community came out to support Edges. What an energy we created together within our local dungeon home. Our volunteers were amazingly versatile and flowed with the energy exchanges beautifully.

I appreciated the opportunity so see such a diverse group of folks get together for a common cause: to behoove our South Bay Kink community!

Alright, after a long visit to DC and a short trip to LA--things are getting back on track.

What’s nicer than your loved-one nicely wrapped under the tree during the holidays? Learn how to lovingly gift wrap that special someone for some special holiday cheer. This hands-on workshop (not Santa’s) will show you in true Martha Stewart style how to easily create your own colorful holiday creations in your own living room. All that is needed will be some colorful rope, your loved one, and what you will learn in this one afternoon. Ornaments are not required, but might add a nice touch.

You will learn some special frills that are sure to thrill. This is the time of year to decorate, so come prepared to see some creative ideas.
As usual practical matters such as safety and rope selection will be covered.

Bring several 50 foot sections of colorful rope – Nylon is best, white will do. Overachievers can bring swatches of sheer fabric, silk, chiffon, ornaments, etc. too. Packages can arrive unwrapped for best results or in comfortable coverings. Unclaimed packages may be paired up with solo elves.

TomFoolery has been practicing gift wrapping for over 5 years. He is active in the local scene. He has taught numerous classes in the bay area and at Burning Man. He has performed at the Supper Club, Wasteland, Black and Blue Ball, and other venues. He has a longstanding fascination with rope and rigging. As these things often go, the slack of the few effects us all. We'll be going through some changes at Edges this month:

If someone comes into Edges past the 730-8pm orientation time, they may NOT come in. Exceptions to this rule: If an agreement was made with this person prior to their arrival. (Often times folks email me saying they want to come but don’t get off work in time and I will agree to do a late orientation with them)

We have several folks that happily come through the door and never attend the orientation. This is unfair to our members that DO, and it’s unfair to Edges that we are not educating our members as we agreed to do.

Thank you for the cooperation and understanding! We will not be happy, and neither will you, to be turned away at the door. Please refer to our calendar for details on orientations.

Our Confidentiality

Here at Edges there are not only one, but two confidentiality agreements set within our membership form and play space rules. The first clause is on the front of our membership form, and initialed and read by each member as they join. We believe this is a great start towards establishing individual members’ respect for one another.

“All information about the identities and activities of Edges Members and Guests is held in strict confidence by all Members and Guests, including telephone numbers, addresses, and all other personal information.”

Let us break this down to its raw intent. This particular clause is meant to show respect towards our members/guests personal or identifiable information. It guarantees that Edges will not share such detailed information, and neither will other attendees of our events. They sign in agreement, knowing that their ‘personal information’ shall be valued as private unless expressly stated. This is meant as protection to those that may desire such; it is not meant to hinder one’s choice to share such information at one’s own discretion. A portion of the smOdyssey (San Jose) confidentiality agreement from their membership form is not too differing on this point as it states:

“… members shall keep confidential all information pertaining to the identity of another member, former member, or prospective member. This information includes, but is limited to the legal name, address, phone numbers, and identity or location of employers or relatives.”

A positive example of sharing with someone without breaking this agreement may be something to this effect: “I watched an amazing scene this weekend! The couple had a knife scene I found wonderfully erotic, and I was asked to step in and help. During their cool down, I was incredibly moved by the males’ ability to serve despite a small handicap.”
Whereas a negative example may state: “Last weekend I was visiting Edges and watched John and Doe create an incredible scene which they asked me to step into. I was amazing at Doe’s ability to serve despite his twisted ankle from baseball practice.”

The second clause is held within the Edges Policies and Rules. Once again the agreement to respect individual privacy is stated, in addition to:

“When non-members inquire about Edges, you may refer them to an Officer. What happens at Edges, stays at Edges.”

Let us now examine the purpose of such a statement. First of all, for our members that have finished the Edges orientation, it was clearly stated that we encourage community support by word of mouth, to share one’s own experiences with others and so forth. We also require those seeking to join Edges have first contacted our space directly. This is done through several means, mostly via the private address. This is similar to the intent of the Black Rose (Washington DC) discretionary policy which states:

“Use your common sense. This is especially important away from our events…What you hear of see in the group stays in the group!”

When we state that what ‘happens at Edges, stays at Edges’, our purpose of intent is to be sure that Edges is provided to our members as a safe space to visit without the concern for ones privacy. Edges respects that partners may discuss and come together under their own agreements pertaining to this point. However, Edges dungeon is not a public play space. Our members both deserve and often times require a degree of sensitivity towards their privacy. We allow this decision to be their own.

Due to the nature of many of our relationships being polyamorous/open (the definition dissection of which will require a separate blog…or book) our community tends to be wonderfully interconnected. However, this can create riffs when that connection is mistaken as in this example: “Hey John, I saw your other play partner, Jane, playing with Doe and wow, what a lovely scene!” This may seem harmless, ‘pillow talk’. But this person has not only shared something about a person she/he’s almost directly connected to: Jane, but she/he has violated Doe’s privacy in doing so!

Many national play spaces, groups, organizations and even online lists have such a policy. Perhaps the wonderful freedom found in the beautiful Bay Area has allowed us to forget the importance such rules may hold for individuals. BDSM and lifestyle choices are considered by many to be private. ‘Private’ may mean within our community, within one’s personal circle of friends, or more precisely within one’s partnership. It is left to our members personal discretion to make this determination for themselves, though not for others.

In conclusion, Edges merely wishes to give to its members what they rightfully own. For many, the vanilla misconceptions about BDSM and kink remain predominantly more damaging than otherwise. We merely wish to aid in protecting those that may wish and/or need such discretion. For those that feel differently, we leave the choice in your hands, with the knowledge that you may not infringe on the privacy of others.

Ahh, full management is back in! I recently returned from a lovely work/play journey to the Atlanta, Georgia area. What might take me to such a place you may ask? Perhaps it was a play partner, the growing expanse of Metro Atlanta, the largest indoor aquarium in the world, and a thriving kink community: not to mention a nearly 12,000 square foot dungeon play space! I enjoyed a local munch (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Gwinnett_Munch) hosted by TenderDom and his lovely wife and one year old baby. They are great group with high energy and are super welcoming. I attended a superb luncheon with the Whippersnappers board (http://www.whippersnappers.ws) and was excited by their enthusiasm.

Their address and name. Second only to Wikipedia in a google search. Their space is similar to Edges on several accounts. Geared by the community, female owned, rentals, large open space as well as smaller more private rooms, easy to find yet unmarked and nestled away from civilians. They’ve got a large water play shower I found myself drooling over. Master Dave is an obvious part of their core volunteers and was quick to give us a tour and plethora of information in return to my numerous questions. Something I made note of: Master Dave had compiled a library of notebooks. Each labeled (animal play, safety, whips and single tails, etc) and filled to the brim with all of the information he could find. There were pages from websites long gone, current favorites and more. This group of notebooks was available in their social area: a great way for newbies and seasoned players alike to brush up on their interests.

Miss Whip has created a wonderful space for their community to come and play. My personal favorite portion of 1763: the way their community has stepped up to support their space. There are several spaces in the area: this is by far the largest and most accomidating. I was able to see Alex and my own vision in a tangible place. The community ran the events, hosted their own parties and brought themselves together under one roof. This had allowed Miss Whip to do her job fully. She is able to concentrate on the space, the rent, the equipment and ways to maintain and grow the dungeon for the whole of the community. I was thrilled!!

I came home with well wishes for both the community I had visited and my own that I love. I look forward to visiting other such spaces and sharing the best ideas from each of us together. If you happen to make it out to Georgia: http://www.1763.net They rent overnight as well!

Men-Only Event, Last Friday: 8/18

WOW: What a great event. Thank you to all that came and participated. It's always a thrill to see such a great group of men come out and work over the space! We look forward to many more Mens events in the months ahead. Thank you to Dave and Leather Masters as well as The Brotherhood for helping host these events. I could not do it without you. I hope everyone had a good time. The suspension scene was terribly hot and the energy level was the highest yet seen. You guys know how to create an amazing event and bring everyone together.

UPCOMING: September we are planning 2 seperate Men-Only Events. The regular Second Saturday party 9/9/06 from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM. We will also be hosting the Bay Area WarmUp to Folsom Street Fair Friday 9/22/06 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM for our men's community. There will be special guests coming to this event (watch for future announcements!!, you don't want to miss this one) and possible Shuttle from San Francisco for those wanting to enjoy varied festivities or just need a fun and reliable ride late into the night.

WarmUp for Folsom Street Fair is for those who do not wish to play in mixed energy events but are seeking a MEN'S EVENT for the gay leathger community to enjoy as their own. Looking forward to seeing you all there and at the fair.
